Experience a week of active outdoor sports in the Canadian Rockies, hiking, horseback riding, biking, and rafting in the wilds of Alberta, Canada, in Summer 2020. Discover Canada’s rivers and roadways, glaciers and caves, ending each exhilarating day sharing good food and laughter with AdventureWomen friends.
Canada’s Kananaskis Country, lying just west of Calgary, Alberta, is raw wilderness where bald eagles, lynx, black and brown bears, moose, and bighorn sheep are common neighbors, while the pure mountain air and stunning views create a feast for the senses! It’s the perfect environment for women like you who prefer a summer that’s active, outdoors, and maybe even challenges your comfort zone.
Over a delicious welcome dinner in Kananaskis Village, meet and get to know your fellow travelers and begin imagining the week ahead. Choose from two options for your first two days. On day one, ride on horseback through alpine fields for a feeling of freedom among overwhelming beauty. Biking is another, more tranquil option that allows you to absorb every stunning view and maybe spy some local wildlife. Bikers and horseback riders then regroup for a beautiful waterfall hike together at the close of the day.
The next day’s options are biking or spelunking, and both are amazing! Cyclists will ride a 15-mile paved route along the Bow River Valley for views of magnificent peaks and sapphire lakes. Spelunkers will learn to abseil down into the Rat’s Nest Caves! While there, explore The Grotto, known for its crystal clear pool and incredible stalactites and stalagmites. (Remember “T” for top: stalactites form from the ceiling and “G” for ground as stalagmites form from the ground!)
Drive along the spectacular Columbia Icefields Parkway, 144 miles of “Ooo and Ahh,” passing glaciers hanging off mountains and some of the highest peaks in North America to reach Athabasca Glacier. On a true glacier hike, explore this starkly beautiful and pristine world in the Canadian Rockies as you negotiate the crevasses and cracks with your experienced guide.
Experience the jubilation of paddling a raft together on the jade-green and aptly named Kicking Horse River. You’ll relax on a few stretches of calm and then hoot with glee through fourteen sets of heart-pumping and joyous Class II to IV rapids, including “Roller Coaster” and “Shotgun.” Go, AdventureWomen!
Adventure Women do love to hike so, to cap off your Canadian Rockies adventure in Alberta, choose one of two spectacular hikes up to the sparkling Minnestimma Lakes. View the glaciated Ten Peaks Mountains on an optional hike to the summit of Sentinel Pass. Over a wonderful farewell dinner, you’ll probably feel like you each packed a whole summer of excitement into seven days in Canada. How fun to share this active alpine experience with other Adventure Women!
