| ADVENTURE VACATION OVERVIEW |

What’s better than staying in a car-free village while hiking in the Swiss Alps? Staying in two car-free villages in the Swiss Alps! Add in abundant sunshine, Swiss hiking trails that wind through the scenic mountains of Switzerland, exciting cable car rides, and a 14-mile-long glacier — all experienced in the company of other fun-loving, adventurous women — and you have an ideal hiking tour in Europe.
During this Swiss adventure vacation, we travel to two of the best and most amazing hiking destinations that Switzerland has to offer: Switzerland’s Bernese Oberland and the Valais region.
The Bernese Oberland is situated in the heart of Switzerland where 13,000-foot, ice-covered mountain peaks — with names like Eiger, Jungfrau, and Mönch — tower over deep blue lakes and lush green forests. The Valais region of Swizerland includes the Aletsch Glacier, designated as the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Swiss Alps, with splendid views of glistening mountain peaks.
Our first car-free village is Wengen in the Bernese Oberland, only reached by the Swiss Railway or on foot. It is located in the heart of the magnificent Alpine landscape at the base of the Eiger and the Jungfrau mountains in Swizerland. At the top of the Jungfrau (or Jungfraujoch, meaning the “Top of Europe”), is the highest railway station in all of Europe!
Wengen is filled with historic timber houses and holiday chalets and hotels dating back to the belle époque period. It is a genuine picture-postcard Swiss mountain village. Since 1893, car-free Wengen has been accessible via the Wengernalp Railway. The village of Lauterbrunnen lies below Wengen in what is often called the “valley of waterfalls”, which is considered to be the most gorgeous valley in the Swiss Alps. The beauty of this area in Switzerland is almost overwhelming!
The second half of our Swiss adventure vacation takes us to the picturesque, car-free village of Bettmeralp in the Valais region. Bettmeralp is only accessible by a large cable car that is located close to the impressive Aletsch Glacier. The Aletsch is the longest glacier in the Swiss Alps (14 miles) and is surrounded by the Aletsch Forest, one of the highest forests in Europe. Sitting on a terrace high above the Rhone Valley, Bettmeralp enjoys almost 300 days of sunshine each year. It has views of the majestic mountain peaks of the Valais including the Weisshorn, Dom, and Switzerland’s infamous Matterhorn.
The Bernese Oberland and Valais regions are a hiker’s paradise. Throughout our Swiss walking tour, we ride the Swiss Railway System: train, cable car, gondola, or cog railway. The Swiss Railway System is one of the finest in the world, and riding the trains brings us closer to the people of Switzerland AND to her photographic scenery.
Take a break from the traffic, noise, and chaos of your everyday life. Rejuvenate yourself in two of the most beautiful areas of the Swiss Alps. Join AdventureWomen for this quintessential, Swiss hiking adventure!
